Moisture Barrier Bags

Moisture barrier bags (MBB) protect moisture-sensitive electronic components from humidity, static and EMI. The opaque 3.6 mil film has a metal barrier layer that holds moisture vapor transmission to 0.015 g per 100 sq in per day, with an anti-static layer for ESD protection and over 40 dB of EMI shielding. Seal the bag with the parts, a desiccant pack and a humidity indicator card inside to dry-pack reels, trays and boards. Recommended for EIA 583 Class 1.

How to Dry-Pack with Moisture Barrier Bags

  • Place the components (reels, trays or tubes) in the bag with the right amount of desiccant and a humidity indicator card.
  • Vacuum or press out excess air, then heat seal across the open end at 250-375 °F (0.5-4 seconds, 40-60 psi).
  • Label the bag with the moisture sensitivity level (MSL) and seal date so the floor life is tracked.
  • Sizes are inside dimensions: leave room at the open end for a clean seal.

Moisture Barrier vs. Static Shielding vs. Anti-Static

  • Moisture barrier bags: opaque, block moisture and shield against static and EMI. For moisture-sensitive (MSL-rated) parts in storage and shipping.
  • Static shielding bags: translucent, shield against static but aren't a moisture barrier. For boards and parts that don't need dry packing.
  • Pink anti-static bags: keep the bag itself from building a charge, but don't shield. For non-sensitive parts around ESD-sensitive work.
